As I’ve gotten older, I’ve had to pay attention to what I eat. Fortunately, one of my nieces is a registered dietician. She’s highly educated with one of those work titles like an alphabet soup behind her name, MS, RD, CNSC, NASM, CPT. She’s worked in hospitals and health spas helping create nutrition plans for patients and clients. One of the qualities her patients/clients like is she is practical about her advice. She doesn’t demand strict adherence to a macro-biotic diet of twigs and dirt. She understands that people like food and taste matters.

One of my favorite things to do is send her decisions I have to make regarding food. Knowing what I like to eat, she never suggests I eat a salad instead, cause that’s not gonna happen. She just accepts my challenge at face value and makes a pick. Here are a few of our text exchanges.

French fries v Onion rings
French fries – They have some potassium.

Coleslaw v Potato salad
Coleslaw – The cabbage has anti-oxidants.

Coleslaw v French fries
Coleslaw – It has more fiber but not likely to save you any calories.

Donut v Muffin
Donut – Muffins are too big, and usually full of preservatives.

Chocolate raised donut v Chocolate croissant
Croissant – Donut has fewer calories but is probably fried in super crappy oil. So eat half of a croissant.

Butter v Mayonnaise
Push – As long as they are organic, they are both fine in moderation.

Mac & cheese v Pizza
That’s a close call – Cheese pizza wins with tomato sauce and probably less cheese. If its pepperoni or sausage, there’s some protein, but lots more fat, so go with mac & cheese. Veggie pizza hands down.

Hot Dog v Hamburger
Hamburger – Hot dogs are very processed and usually higher in non-nutritive sodium, and nitrates. And if you add some tomato, lettuce and onion, you have a little vegetable action.

Milk shake v Cola
Milk shake – U.S. sodas uses high-fructose corn syrup instead of sugar, unless it’s a specialty soda or Mexican soda, but even then go with a shake. The milk and ice cream have a little protein.

So, there you go, enjoy your burger and fries, wash it down with a chocolate shake and know that you’re doing your body some good. Well, okay, it could be worse; you could be having a hot dog with onion rings and a Coke.
