I’m a bit of a Trekky; I admit it freely. I don’t speak Klingon, I didn’t watch all the spin-offs, really just TOS (Trek talk for The Original Series.), meaning the 60’s TV series starring Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy, et al. A few summers ago, JJ Abrahm’s reboot of the franchise got off to a rousing start telling the origin stories of the Starship Enterprise and it’s crew. The action movie was full of fun acknowledgements of the series and the rich history of the franchise and it’s characters. Sulu’s training in hand-to-hand combat is fencing. (The Naked Time) Star Trek’s obsession with green women. (Whom Gods Destroy and The Cage). And in a rare feat, it was fun for non-fans as evidenced by the son’s enjoyment of the movie.

So, it was with great expectations that I sat down to watch Star Trek: Into Darkness. And I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a fun summer movie with lots of fighting and things blowing up. It’s good looking film with solid visual effects. And I can’t give you too much about the story without spoiling it. Suffice to say, TOS fans will enjoy the story. I’m sure if I sat down and really spent time processing it all I could find flaws, but that’s not what summer movies are for. They’re for getting away and having some fun. And that’s exactly what Into The Darkness delivers.
